A boxer identified as Abiodun Aderinwale, a.k.a ‘Abey Ijangbon’ and others now at large, has been accused of punching a grandmother, Mrs. Iyabo Dosunmu, 60, to death over a disagreement.
The incident which happened in Alagbodo, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, was immediately reported at the Alagbado Police Division, and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos for investigation.
P.M.NEWS gathered that trouble started when Alimat, the grandchild of the grandmother and her friend fought over who should occupy a vantage position while watching a television show in a neighbour’s house. The quarel later degenerated to a scuffle.
In trying to make peace between the kids, the deceased intervened, but this did not go down well with the suspect’s mother, Mrs. Aderinwale, who was also at the scene, and the two grandmothers exchanged words.
Mrs. Aderinwale was alleged to have mobilised members of her family afterwards including the wanted boxer and they allegedly attacked the deceased, beating her to coma. She later died on the way to a nearby private hospital.
P.M.NEWS learnt that the assailants on hearing about the death of the old woman, fled, while the policemen from the Alagbado police station have been able to arrest the boxer’s parents.
They were said to have made useful statements that are helping the police to track down their fleeing sons.
The deceased’s daughter, Mrs. Nofisat Dosunmu, told P.M.NEWS that “We want government to intervene. We learnt that the Aderinwales are planning to escape justice. We have it on a good authority that they have perfected plans to bribe the police and the doctor who will perform the autopsy on our mother’s corpse.
“But I am categorically stating that she was hale and hearty before she was attacked. There was nothing wrong with her. She was punched several times by Abey Ijongbon before she fainted. Everybody knows that the Aderinwales are very troublesome. In fact, we are the fourth among the list of families they have fought in the neighbourhood. They beat me to a pulp and I spent several days in the hospital,” she alleged.
