Why we attacked Kano – Boko Haram
The Boko Haram sect has given reasons for its weekend attacks, which led to the killing of about 162 people in Kano State, saying it was to avenge the persecution of its members.
Spokesman of the group, Abul Qaqa, made this known in a telephone interview with newsmen in Maiduguri, yesterday.
Claiming responsibility for the attacks and multiple bombings on police stations, State Security Services, SSS, and passport office buildings in Kano metropolis, Qaga said: "Last night's (Friday) attacks and bombings of Kano city followed our warnings in the second week of December, 2011."
'WE WARNED KANO STAKEHOLDERS'
Besides, Qaqa also referred reporters to an e-mail message in which Imam Muhammad
Abubakar Shekau, Spiritual Head of the sect, threatened that: "Unless urgent steps are taken, the group will launch endless and violent attacks on Kano and its environs because of arbitrary arrest and persecution of his members."
N/E learnt that in the said e-mail, Shekau said the group had written an open letter to the people of Kano, including the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero; Governor Musa Kwankwaso, Alhaji Aminu Dantata and Khalifa Sheikh Isiaka Rabiu on recent happenings in the ancient city.
Shekau revealed that but for the intervention of some prominent scholars in Kano, his group would have made the city ungovernable a long time ago.

No end to ASUU strike as ASUU debunks plan to End strike .
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has dismissed claim by the Minister of Education, Professor Rakayat Rufai, that the union will call off its ongoing strike Monday.
ASUU chairman in the University of Ibadan, Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye said the strike was still on and total until the federal government substantially implemented the agreement reached with the union in 2009.
Ajiboye said the National Assembly had played its role with the passage of the 70 year retirement age for academics in the Professorial cadre.
He said, "the Union is aware of the passage of the 70 years retirement age by the two houses of the National Assembly. However, we are quick to point out that a bill becomes a law only when it is accented to by the President. Our Union is still awaiting the law."
"That apart from the retirement age, other issues outstanding include: University autonomy (presently Governing Councils of all Federal universities have been dissolved), Funding of Universities – this is of very serious concern to our Union due to the level of degradation in those Universities, payment of earned allowances and other welfare matters to our members.
Government needs to show seriousness with regards to the above outstanding issues."
The strike embarked upon on Monday December 5th, 2011, by the Union to force the FGN to fully implement the agreement it freely entered into with our Union in September 2009, he noted, is still on.

Mom arrested for allegedly letting child, 10, get a tattoo
A Cobb County mother was charged with misdemeanor child cruelty after she allegedly let her 10-year-old son get a tattoo in memory of his deceased brother.
Chuntera Napier, of Acworth, told Channel 2 that her 12-year-old son, Malik, was struck and killed by a motorist in Macon about two years ago, and her other son, Gaquan, wanted a tattoo like hers to remember his older brother by.
“My son came to me and said, ‘Mama, I want to get a tattoo with Malik on it, rest in peace,'” Napier said. “It made me feel good to know to know that he wanted his brother on him.”
She said she did not know it is illegal in Georgia to tattoo anyone under the age of 18.
“What do I say to a child who wants to remember his brother? It’s not like he’s asking me if can I get him a Sponge Bob,” she said. “He’s asking me for something that’s in remembrance of his brother. Well, how do I tell a child no?”
Napier took her son to a tattoo artist in Smyrna. When the child went to school, someone noticed the tattoo and called authorities.
The mother was arrested Tuesday and spent that day and Wednesday morning in jail. In addition to the child cruelty count, she was charged with being a party to a crime. She has since been released to await a March court hearing.
“I always thought if a parent gives consent, then it’s fine,” Napier said. “How can somebody else say it’s not OK? He’s my child, and I have a right to say what I want for my child.”
